Vignette

Vignette is a camera effect that can be enabled on the Default Camera or any Camera Entity added to a 3D Document.

Vignette is an effect that simulates the darkening in real-world camera lenses. In Photography, vignette is the term used for the darkening and/or desaturating towards the edges of an image compared to the center. It is often used for artistic effect, such as to draw focus to the center of an image.

No VignetteVignette

The above example was generated in DriveWorks using both the Vignette effect and Ambient Occlusion. Vignette will change the color of the camera view towards the edges of the camera. This effect can be modified to make more dramatic effects in the Preview Control.

In the above example, we have entered high or strong values to illustrate the effect. In normal circumstances, you would use lower settings to apply a subtle effect.

Information Panel

With the Environment selected, the following will be displayed in the Information Panel.

Vignette Enabled

Enable and disable Vignette on the Default Camera. Disabling vignette means it won't be shown on the Default Camera. TRUE enables the effect, FALSE disables it.

Intensity

Intensity is a flat multiplier on the Vignette effect. Increasing this value makes the Vignette effect stronger.

Exponent

Increasing this value has the effect of making the Vignette effect darker. This value effects the curve of the fall off and changes how quickly it fades to the selected color.

Shape

Shape controls the shape of the Vignette effect. A math equation is used to calculate the shape. Changing the input value on this property changes the shape of the vignette effect.

You can find some example values below:

  • <1 - A value less than 1 will create a cross shape.
  • 1 - A value of 1 will create a diamond shape.
  • 2 - A value of 2 will create a circle shape.
  • >2 - A value greater than 2, towards infinite will create a square shape.

Inner Area Size

Inner Area Size controls the area of the Preview Control that is effected by the Vignette effect. This value is a percentage of the control size.

For example, if you enter 0.5 (50%) a rectangle half the size of the entire control in the center would be safe from the Vignette effect.

Color

Color sets the color of the Vignette effect. By default this is black but you can set the Vignette to any color. You can also set transparent colors and fade the vignette effect to nothing. This allows you to create any effect.

  • Red - a number from 0 to 255
  • Green - a number from 0 to 255
  • Blue - a number from 0 to 255
  • Alpha - a number from 0 to 255

Enabling Vignette

To enable Vignette on the Default Camera, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to Environment in a 3D Document.
  2. Set the property Vignette Enabled to be TRUE.

Viewing Vignette in a 3D Document

Vignette will not be visible in a 3D Document while in edit mode. To preview the Vignette Camera Effect, you must enter Preview Mode.

Preview Mode can be found on the Command Bar in a 3D Document.

Preview Mode will hide the 3D Document triads, hide wireframe selections, show Camera entities and enable any Camera effects.
