How To: Backup an Individual or Shared Group and Data

Backing up a Group serves the following purposes:

  • Allows the backup to be restored for testing software upgrades on an isolated (sandbox) environment.
  • Serves as a fallback in the unlikely event an implementation needs to be restored.

Two options are available for backing up group information and DriveWorks data.

  1. DriveWorks Data Management - Pack and Go

    Preferred option for:

    • Smaller datasets (with minimal quantities of specifications and released files)
    • A shared group and data - when a connection to the source shared group and data and the target shared group and data is not available.

For example when the shared group and data exists on a network that is not accessible from the network the group and data is to be backed up to.

  2. DriveWorks Data Management - Copy Group

    Preferred option for:

    • Larger datasets (with large quantities of specifications and released files)
    • A shared group and data - when a connection to the source shared group and data and the target shared group and data is available.

DriveWorks Data Management - Pack and Go

Pack and Go is the preferred method to create a backup for:

  • Smaller datasets (with minimal quantities of specifications and released files)
  • A shared group and data - when a connection to the source shared group and data and the target shared group and data is not available.

For example when the shared group and data exists on a network that is not accessible from the network the group and data is to be backed up to.

The result of using the Pack and Go feature is a package (.drivepkg) file that can be copied to any machine (with DriveWorks installed) to be unpacked.

See Unpack a DriveWorks Package file for more information.

Unpacking will re-reference all captured, specification and released file data to the location it is extracted to.

See DriveWorks Data Management - Pack And Go for more information.

The following files (if used) should be backed up separately as they will not be included in the Pack and Go file.

Shared Groups

Pack and go will convert a shared group to an individual group.

We recommend the shared group is backed up separately, see How To: Backup a SQL Server Database for more information.

DriveWorks Data Management - Copy Group

Copy Group is the preferred method to create a backup for:

  • Larger datasets (with large quantities of specifications and released files)
  • A shared group and data - when a connection to the source shared group and data and the target shared group and data is available.

Copy Group connects to the source group and copies all information and data to a target group and location.

See DriveWorks Data Management - Copy Group for more information.

The following files (if used) should be backed up separately as they will not be included in the Pack and Go file.

Backing up DriveWorks Live Customization Files

DriveWorks Live customizations should be backed up manually by copying the custom files to a backup location.

Integration Theme

Backing up DriveWorks Pro Server Configuration File (DriveWorks 23 Onwards)

DriveWorks Pro Server (from DriveWorks 23 onwards) uses a configuration file to store settings applied in the Pro Server Management Console.

The file is located on the machine that runds DriveWorks Pro Server in the following location:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\DriveWorks\[version number]\DriveWorksProServerSettings.json

This file should be copied to a backup location.

Restoring a Pack and Go Package File

Pack and Go will produce a .drivepkg file, this can be deployed to an environment where the back up is to be restored.

See Unpack a DriveWorks Package file for more information.

Restoring a .drivepkg file will re-reference any file locations that differ from the original location.

Restoring a Shared Group

Pack and go will convert a shared group to an individual group.

When restoring a shared group the following options are available:

  1. Upscale the individual group to a shared group
  2. Restore the SQL backup of the shared group

See How To: Restore a SQL Server Database for more information.

This will mean re-referencing all group data, if locations have changed, using Data Management
